010.0800         Naming of School Facilities

NEW POLICY

1.0  PURPOSE

Uintah School District believes that the naming of school facilities is a significant event that reflects the values of both the school district and the entire community.  It is the belief of the School Board that such an important decision should come after careful deliberations.

2.0  POLICY

2.1  Only the Board of Education has both the authority and responsibility to name all district facilities.

2.2   If a facility is to be named or renamed, input should be received from stakeholders.

2.3  Under conditions of extraordinary school/community contribution and/or significant financial donations, portions of schools (room, library, fields, etc.) may be named after a family or individual.  Naming after any school personnel must follow the retirement of that individual.  The following should be taken into consideration:

2.3.1        The impact the individual and/or family had on the overall quality of learning experience of the students in the district over an extended period of time.

2.3.2        The impact the individual and/or family had on the overall reputation of the school district and/or the community as a whole.

2.3.3        The overall character of the individual and/or family and whether or not individuals are still alive that could tarnish that character and/or reputation.

2.3.4        Significant financial contribution that could help in the construction and/or operation of the facility.

2.4  A plaque or other appropriate memorial may be chosen for a facility.  This decision will fall under the responsibility of the Board.

2.5  Naming may not necessarily be perpetual.
